Windows Media Services Management Pack for OpsMgr 2007

Introduction

Currently there is no management pack available for Operations Manager 2007 to monitor Windows Media Services 9 on Server 2003 or Windows Media Services 2008 (9.5). For MOM 2000/2005 a management pack can be downloaded from Microsoft’s catalogue. When originally using the MOM 2005 version for a network radio application, it became obvious that it was a bit basic and lacked some features that were needed. Over time I built extra discovery, monitoring, tasks and reports around it. Later I ported and consolidated most of it into a native OpsMgr 2007 management pack. I did not actually use any code from the MOM 2005 pack but rather wanted to get together a native OpsMgr 2007 one.

The performance monitors are based on information published in the whitepaper ‘Optimizing Windows Media Services’ available from Microsoft: http://www.microsoft.com/windows/windowsmedia/howto/articles/optimize_web.aspx

Contents
  • Discovery: Windows Media Services Computer Roles and Publishing Points
  • Compatibility: Windows Server 2003 and Windows Server 2008
  • Rules and Monitors: Availability and Performance related
  • Tasks and Recoveries
  • Reports
Instructions

Please read the management pack guide document fist. I tried to make it as complete as possible. If you have questions,  find mistakes, have ideas on what to include in the management pack or would like to get an XML version of the management pack, contact me by email.

Update (May 5, 2009): supports Windows Media Services 2008 – V. 1.0.2.10

Download WMS 9 Management Pack Guide V 1.0.2.10

Download WMS 9 Management Pack V 1.0.2.10 (sealed) (rename after downloading – it is a zip file)

    Dear Raphael,

We are trying to import your custom Windows Media Services 9 Management Pack for OpsMgr 2007 but were unable to find the System.Performance.Library.mp 6.0.5000.15. Can you tell us where you got it from?

Other question: Do you know of any other management packs for WMS in Opsmgr2007? Or, do you know where to get the converted Mom 2000 management pack described here:

    http://www.microsoft.com/downloads/details.aspx?FamilyID=8d1f9eb4-0db3-452c-a095-6e596595141c&displaylang=en ?

I know we have to run Mom2005 for the conversion tool (mp2xml.exe) but for some reason we are unable to install Mom2005 (it halts when selecting the SQL server DB instance).

I Hope you can help us,

    Thanks in advance!

    Best regards,

    Remco Hozee (Netherlands)

System.Performance.Library.mp 6.0.5000.15 was part of the SNMP V1 hotfix for OpsMgr 2007 RTM (http://support.microsoft.com/kb/939364). However; OpsMgr SP1 ships with a newer System.Performance.Library.mp, which will work as well.

Where do I find the actual management pack?

You can download the file here:

    https://rburri.files.wordpress.com/2008/03/customwmsxxmlzip.doc

Just note that you’ll need to rename the file after downloading as it really is a .zip archive. In it you’ll find both the user guide and the management pack (Custom.WMS.x.mp)

Hello, this is a great management pack. But I’m wondering if there is a way to override the monitor “Windows Media Services Publishing Point stop” to have the recovery task to Start Broadcast Publishing Point” to run automatically?

I’ve tried to find the override but I can’t seem to get it to go. Any hints or ideas?

    Regards.
